Welcome Week

 Dear All,

Welcome to the new year of BAPP! I'm delighted to inform you I will be taking over as programme leader this year. Helen will be continuing as a supervisor and is still leading the MAPP programme. For any issues with enrollment, assignment submission etc feel free to drop me an email, but also please CC in your supervisor just so we can ensure all the right information is shared!

This week is welcome week so please don't book tutorials with your supervisors until next week! Some of you will be changing to different supervisors as we have a few new members joining to the team. They will all individually be in touch with details on how to book supervisions. For new students you will receive a welcome email from your supervisor by the start of next week.

This has been a fascinating summer for performers as the first real restriction free season since 2019! Live performance has come back in a spectacular manner with production value incredibly high. As a researcher I've been delighted to see how artists have upped their game this summer. My personal performance highlights have been to see the indomitable Kathryn Hunter as King Lear at the Globe on the hottest day of the year, it started raining in the scene where Lear calls down a storm of vengeance. I finally got to see my favourite performers Grace Jones headline her own Meltdown Festival at the royal festival hall with one of the greatest stage entrances I've ever seen (don't believe me? check it out here), she did a costume change after every song and didn't care how long it took! In the music theater world I went to see Sister Act with Beverley Knight as Doloris and it was sheer perfection. I also journeyed north of the border to the Edinburgh Fringe to see what exciting works are in the pipeline and saw great comedy from Sophie Duke and Ari Eldjárn, the remarkable play The Last Return by Sonya Kelly a wonderfully dark comedy about queuing and an entirely improvised musical about the inside of a Saxophone by Showstoppers.

I'm excited to hear about your experiences on the arts this summer whether it's something you've seen, you've been part of or created yourself please share thoughts and links in the comments below!
